Garam Masala meaning “Warm mixture” in Hindi is a fragrant, sweet, savory, and warm combination of ground spices. Garam Masala varies widely regionally in India with some being hotter or sweeter than others.
Traditionally Garam Masala is added toward the end of cooking, this is done not only to season the dish but also to add an enticing aroma. It can also be toasted in oil to bring out warmer flavors prior to cooking. Garam Masala is most traditionally used in curries, lentils, or soups. However, it is also fantastic when used to season meats or even added to baked goods such as breads, pies, and cookies prior to baking.
